Here at the Football Transfer Tavern it is the second time today that a transfer battle between Chelsea and Manchester United has been talked about and the Daily Mirror has provided us with plenty more details.
Sir Alex Ferguson has pulled his socks firmly up in the chase for Benfica player Ezequiel Garay after he caught wind of Chelsea’s interest in his long-term transfer target. Chelsea of course are well known for buying just about anyone they take a fancy too and Fergie is determined to land his man ahead of his rivals.
Manchester United have been tracking the defender for a while now and are set on pushing through a £15 million deal before Roman Abramovich can swoop in and take him out from under their noses. There have also been whispers of interest from Catalan giants Barcelona for the 26-year-old former Real Madrid defender yet the player himself reportedly has his heart firmly set on a move to Old Trafford.
Having sent scouts to watch the player more than a few times, Ferguson is convinced the defender could be an eventual successor to Rio Ferdinand and feels that Garay has all the attributes that fit the bill for when Rio eventually does hang up his boots.
