After failing to secure a move away from Porto last year, it seems that Alvaro Pereira could be on his way during this transfer window. Earlier this week the player’s agent suggested that Pereira would be interested in a move away from Portugal if the right offer came up, whilst his personal lawyer has later confirmed that a move from the Estadio de Dragao is definitely on the cards.
With Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool all reportedly interested in the left-back Pereira is certainly not short of any suitors. In addition, Porto have cut their ridiculous £30m valuation, which put off those interested last summer, to just £15m.
As a Liverpool fan, I’m going to concentrate on the Reds interest in the player. No doubt that Pereira is a talent but does Brendan Rodgers’ really need him heading into this season? My answer is – for a fee of £15m no.
There is no doubt that Pereira is a fantastic player. The Uruguayan has been in top form since joining Porto in 2009, leading to his club’s £30million evaluation last summer. The 26 year old will be a strong addition to any club should he choose to leave Porto, which now seems increasingly likely.
Yet for Liverpool, £15m is too much money. Not that Pereira isn’t worth it, just there are more pressing matters at hand. Having just confirmed the signing of Joe Allen for that figure, the Reds will surely be watching their finances as they try not to overspend at the end of a financially difficult season last year.
In addition there may be more important pieces than the left back position to address – should Andy Carroll choose to leave it would leave only Suarez and Borini as striking options, whilst the departure of either Daniel Agger or Martin Skrtel is also a lingering threat. Having already brought in Jose Enrique last year (who has only had one season to get into form) to add to the youth of the likes of Jack Robinson and Jon Flanagan, Liverpool may have enough for the season in the left back department.
In short, I would certainly take Pereira as a Liverpool fan. Yet £15m is a bit steep for a position that already has some depth at Anfield. For such a fee Pereira would be expected to start, which also sends out negative signals to Jose Enrique who has not long been at the club. Despite lacking form towards the end of last year, Brendan Rodgers’ should put faith in the Spaniard and give him a chance this season.
Pereira is a very good player, yet he would certainly be suited more to Chelsea, as a replacement in the long term for Ashley Cole, or Tottenham, where Benoit Assou-Ekotto has failed to make the position his own. If he were cheaper then any strength in depth at the position would be fantastic for Liverpool. But for £15m, it’s a no from me.
