Real Madrid admit defeat in Chelsea star chase (not Hazard or Courtois)

One Chelsea fan has already had to eat his hat here in the Transfer Tavern (the result of a pre-season bet) with Marcos Alonso having been a roaring success at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, said supporter claimed aloud that the Spaniard would be a first-team outcast under Antonio Conte by the halfway point of the season, but the former Bolton and Sunderland man has been one of the Blues’ key players as they surge towards the title.

And his performances have not gone unnoticed, with MARCA claiming that the 26-year-old has been a major target for Real, but that they have admitted defeat in their pursuit of him.

The Spaniards supposedly looked at the full-back last summer when he left Fiorentina for Chelsea, but instead opted to keep faith with Fabio Coentrao – a decision they now regret.

MARCA suggest that a fresh approach in a few months’ time has been considered, but that the La Liga leaders are sure any approach would be unsuccessful.

Interestingly, Los Blancos have also been aligned with Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois of late, so the Londoners may not be completely out of the woods yet.

Has Marcos Alonso been the best PL left-back this season?
