Reece James looks a perfect fit for Chelsea’s complex tactical system

For a team of Chelsea’s considerable force, the transfer window has always been a period in time where they have been very underwhelming. Indeed, ever since the initial days of the Roman Abramovich era, the Blues have seemingly taken their foot off the transfer pedal and allowed things to rot.

Luckily, and we’re trying to be positive here, the Blues are set to be banned from the buying any players this summer, which leads to them needing to entrust their current options and even turn to youth.

Obviously, the London giants are known for sending players out on loan. That’s a policy so often criticised for various footballing and moral reasons but there are some success stories here and there. In fact, one player it has worked very well for looks a genuine prospect.

Who, you may ask? Right-back Reece James is an option Chelsea should seriously consider utilising next season.

James, (who is valued at £900k on Transfermarkt) has had plenty of praise in regards to his performances for Wigan this season, having played in every single game so far. Considering the club’s struggles there this season with the dipping form of the stoic Cesar Azpilicueta, it could be a masterstroke.

It must be remembered that right now, the 19-year-old is a standout player for a side battling against relegation in the Championship so a return back to Stamford Bridge may prove to be a lot easier than some think. That kind of pressure is a lot deeper than honing your craft at a super club and the Premier League is currently littered with success stories from the Football League, which should serve as inspiration for the Blues.

Yet again, Chelsea aren’t blessed with right-back options, as it could be argued Azpilicueta is far better in the centre of defence anyway. Meanwhile, Davide Zappacosta is another option but Reece James, as a young English talent, would surely be a better option for Chelsea in the long-run.

An accomplished crosser of the ball, shown by his two assists but with the pace and strength he has, it allows the 19-year-old to be a versatile option from centre-back to right-midfield. Considering the tactical complexity of a Maurizio Sarri system, these are pretty much perfect attributes.
