Chelsea fans here in the Tavern are starting to feel confident once again, as Tuesday night’s draw with Barcelona has caused for a positive mood.
The Blues have been on the receiving end of a whole load of criticism so far this season, with defensive issues costing their quest for Champions League football on numerous occasions. And, it appears that club captain Gary Cahill is turning into more of a villain at Stamford Bridge, as a woeful run of form continues to worry the many supporters situated here in the Tavern. Although, this could potentially have consequences for the defender, as according to reports in The Times, Gary Cahill’s loss of form could cost the Englishman a World Cup place.
The experienced Englishman is at risk of missing out on a trip to Russia for this year’s World Cup after displaying a poor run of form this campaign. Indeed, after being dropped by Blues manager Antonio Conte for their last encounter against Barcelona, it now appears that England manager Gareth Southgate has concerns over the 32-year-old.
Although, this could prove to be one of the most difficult decisions for Southgate since taking the job, after seeing Cahill start all seven competitive matches managed by the 47-year-old and even captained the side against Germany. Indeed, it appears that the source of Southgate’s concerns has been identified, as England’s World Cup qualifying match against Scotland saw the Chelsea man concede soft free kicks and give away possession.
Gary Cahill is undoubtedly one of the most experienced defensive members in the England squad, something that will work in his favour for a possible spot on the plane. Although, his performances so far this campaign have not warranted a place in the World Cup squad, as youth could be set to feature instead of the ageing defender. Nevertheless, if Cahill is included in the squad for the trip to Russia, then his experience could prove to be crucial.
