Southampton attacker responds to transfer talk, Chelsea have been linked

Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern have spent the first half of the season raving about Virgil van Dijk’s performances, and the second fretting over whether he’ll still be at the club next season.

The Netherlands international has been out of action since a 3-0 win over Leicester City in January, but was producing arguably the best form of any centre-back in the Premier League previously and appeared to be a shoe-in for the Team of the Season.

The 25-year-old is unlikely to play again this season but that hasn’t stopped speculation over his future at St. Mary’s, with the latest reports from Mirror Football mooting Chelsea and Manchester City as his keenest summer suitors ahead of a potential £50million transfer battle.

It’s added that Everton and Liverpool have also ‘been in’ for the 6 foot 4 centre-half, but Chelsea believe they can beat all three Premier League rivals to Van Dijk’s much coveted signature.

Southampton team-mate Dusan Tadic has been discussing widespread interest in the towering Dutchman, admitting he’s not at all surprised by it.

As quoted by Goal, he said; “I am not surprised [that big teams want Van Dijk]. There are not so many choices [for top defenders]. He is a very good player and I hope he will recover well and keep playing well for Southampton.

“I think he is a clever boy and that he needs to be calm and work on recovering and then everything will come into place. You need to be professional and then everything that he wishes will happen.”

Tadic himself is enjoying another decent season on the south coast, providing three goals and four assists in the Premier League despite not always being in the starting XI.
