Chelsea could be set to lose Willian to Manchester United this summer.
The Red Devils have pursued the Brazilian winger since the transfer window opened back in May. Jose Mourinho must be eager to find a hard-working right winger following Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s departure and views Willian as the perfect replacement. The duo worked together at Chelsea, and the 29-year-old fuelled transfer speculation by missing five days of training due to passport issues.
Real Madrid and Barcelona are also believed to be interested in the former Shakhtar forward who was a key player for the Blues last season. New boss, Maurizio Sarri, will not want to lose him with just three days remaining in the transfer window. However, the latest set of reports suggest United will offer Anthony Martial in exchange – an offer Chelsea should not turn down.
Valued at £58.5m by Transfermarkt, Martial has been tipped to leave United this summer after falling out of favour with Mourinho. He started just 18 Premier League games last season but still managed to score nine goals and register five assists. The Frenchman was publicly criticised by his manager for flying home from their pre-season tour following the birth of his child.
Losing Willian would undoubtedly be a massive blow to Chelsea but gaining Martial in return would be an astute long-term move. The ex-Monaco man is still just 22-years-old and has never been given a chance to really show what he is capable of in the Premier League. On the other hand, Willian is 29 and won’t have as many years left at the top level.
Martial will be out to prove Mourinho wrong, and Chelsea could benefit greatly.
