Chelsea have begun life under Maurizio Sarri in the best way possible and for them all they hope is that it continues.
Having managed to keep influential players such as Eden Hazard and N’golo Kante, the Blues are in-line to make a return to the top four with the added addition of quality players such as Jorginho, Kepa and Kovacic.
The latter of the trio – Mateo Kovacic was brought in on-loan from Real Madrid and judging by his debut performance, he seems to have crushed the hopes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and any previous hopes he had of establishing himself as a Chelsea regular.
The Englishman came back to Chelsea on the back of a superb season with Crystal Palace and a strong World Cup performance for England. He was at the top of his game and many believed that now was the time for him to get involved with the Chelsea squad and stay there.
That in some respect has come true but after not even being included in the match-day squad for their second game of the season, Loftus-Cheek may find he made the wrong move staying put.
His performances last season meant options were on the table for the £16.2 million-rated midfielder but now with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic to contend with as well as the likes of N’golo Kante and Cesc Fabregas, it’s hard to see where Ruben Loftus-Cheek would fit into Maurizio Sarri’s plans.
At 22-years-old, his career could already be at a make or break point. There could be huge consequences for staying at Chelsea and if he doesn’t either fight his way into contention or bag a move away in January, Loftus-Cheek could be another “what-if” story that the Blues regret.
