Transfer frustration could continue for Chelsea fans following world record quote

Following their loss to Burnley on the opening day of the Premier League campaign, the Chelsea fans drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern really could do with some cheering up.

It’s been a pretty dreadful summer thus far for the Blues in the bar who, despite seeing their side splash well over £100m, believe Antonio Conte’s squad is still far too thin.

So, reports from Yahoo Sport have only proved even more frustrating. They claim Southampton have told potential suitors that they WON’T be bullied into selling star defender, Virgil van Dijk.

Indeed, the Dutchman has been touted as a potential target for the Blues, as well as Manchester City and Liverpool, and has handed in a transfer request on the south coast.

Though the report reveals that the Saints are hopeful of keeping the Oranje star for another year, a bid of around £70m could reportedly tempt them into a sale. A world record fee for the defender, it’d be interesting to see who’d be willing to pay it.

Landlord’s Verdict:

While Chelsea do need bodies, such a fee for a centre-back may not be the best move right now. Their backline is already rather stocked and, while the Holland star would improve their ranks, perhaps there are bigger issues afoot.

City, meanwhile, would probably win the league should they introduce him to their rearguard.
