Bookmakers have had Chelsea as favourites for a number of FC Porto players for a long time and it is reported that AVB will finally make his move. Hulk was proved difficult for anyone to sign with his allegiance to Porto pledged and an astronomical release scuppering any big money bids. Falcao looks set for Atletico if anyone and so Moutinho and Pereira are now on the radar.
There is no doubt that both players would be good additions to Chelsea’s line up. Joao Moutinho, able to operate in a deep or attacking role in midfield, he is a true general of the park. He was named captain of Sporting Lisbon at the age of just 20, showing maturity of the mind beyond his years. His game is that of a typical captain’s – displaying composure in midfield with determination and work rate to match.
Alvaro Pereira, while perhaps not the most iconic and fashionable name in world football, is a solid and dependable performer nonetheless. He played a key role on Uruguay’s surprise 3rd place finish in the World Cup 2010 and has helped them win the Copa America this summer. He can operate as a left-back or at left-midfield.
The source in question has quoted an astonishing fee of €55 million however – which makes the rumours difficult to believe.
Joao Moutinho is the more believable of the two. As Chelsea utilise 3 central midfielders, Moutinho would be able to play in either the centre midfield role or the anchor slot. He would also fit in well with the side as another member of a large Portuguese speaking contingent. With Essien’s injury, Moutinho could be an extra body that Chelsea may well need.
Alvaro Pereira doesn’t fit in my book. He is, as aforementioned, a capable left-sided player. However, he wouldn’t surpass Cole at left-back and is nowhere near as effective in the very advanced LW position Malouda holds down quite well. With promising individuals on Chelsea’s squad such as Patrick van Aanholt and Daniel Sturridge, perhaps a substantial investment could be used in other positions.
They are both decent players, but this transfer rumour is difficult to believe. The fee quoted is a large one for two players that perhaps don’t warrant it. Moutinho is the more believable, but i’d put my house on not seeing the Pereira deal come to fruition.
