It seems the Gareth Bale hysteria never wants to end as every week there are stories coming out of another top European club ready to purchase him this summer. The Tottenham hierarchy will be bracing themselves to fend off bids as some clubs are ready to offer £40 million plus.
With this in mind, unfortunately for Spurs fans their will have to be a contingency strategy in place should Bale decide to see pastures new. The Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport claims the London club have made enquiries about Lyon’s Brazilian left-sided player Michel Bastos.
The 27 year old is just as versatile as Bale in that he can play left back or left wing. He is highly rated across Europe with a good all round style; fast, eye for goal, fierce shot and capable of a putting a good ball in the box. Bastos has all the attributes that make him a perfect replacement for Bale in the Spurs team.
Given the fact Lyon paid some €18 million to take from fellow French side Lille, he could be an expensive acquisition. However the sharp rise in Bale’s value means Spurs would be able to purchase Bastos and have money left over, if the Welshman left the club.
In regards to Bale, the speculation of a Spurs contingency plan may further encourage European clubs to step up their interest in the winger. The likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona and Inter Milan have all been linked with a summer bid.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp is desperate to keep the 21-year-old at White Hart Lane and he even signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract earlier this month, but if the club fail to qualify for the Champions League, he may still look to leave. One assurance will be the high fee expected as he is tied to a long-term contract.
