Manchester City fans at the Transfer Tavern are daring Chelsea supporters to a round of fisticuffs, amid news Blues scouts will be in attendance for the Citizens’ Champions League clash with Monaco this evening.
But it appears our rowdy City patrons have got the wrong end of the stick; Chelsea’s scouts aren’t running the rule over their divisional rivals – rather, three members of the opposition.
Indeed, The Times revealed earlier this week that the west Londoners have already ‘initiated discussions’ over a transfer deal for £70million-rated Monaco attacker Bernardo Silva.
And London Evening Standard are reporting that Chelsea scouts will be in attendance tonight to take another look at Silva, as well as his highly-rated team-mates Djibril Sidibe and Tiemoue Bakayoko – although Sidibie is a doubt due to a recent knock.
Interest in Sidibe stems from the fact he can play as a defender or a midfielder on either flank, which theoretically makes him ideal for the wing-back roles so crucial in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 set-up.
Bakayoko, meanwhile, is simply enjoying a fantastic campaign, averaging 3.6 tackles and 3.4 interceptions per match in the Champions League whilst helping his side claim top spot in the Ligue 1 table.
He’s seen as a potential replacement for John Obi Mikel, who left for the Chinese Super League in January, and appears obtainable this summer, having recently elected not extended his Monaco contract past 2019.
There are undoubtedly other factors in consideration but an impressive performance in the Champions League against an English club will surely increase the likelihood of the Blues coming good on their reported interest in the next transfer window.
