It’s been a miserable week so far for the Chelsea fans down in the Transfer Tavern, but with a trip to Tottenham on the horizon, it could be a cracking weekend.
Antonio Conte is still frantically working on bringing in new recruits after failing with a number of transfer targets this summer.
A deal for Alex Sandro and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain appear no closer, with neither Juventus or Arsenal willing to listen to offers.
However, the Telegraph are reporting that Leicester City are willing to listen to offers for their trusty centre-mid Danny Drinkwater.
The Englishman has been superb for Leicester in recent seasons, particularly in their title winning campaign in 2016. Yet the interest from Stamford Bridge has come as a surprise to many.
On first look, Drinkwater doesn’t have the aptitude to play in a top tier side like Chelsea. However after analysing why the Blues would be interest, it makes far more sense.
Nemanja Matic, who departed for Manchester United in a £40m move earlier this summer has left a gaping hole in the Chelsea engine room. Drinkwater’s work-rate and footballing brain – two traits that were pivotal in Matic’s game are believed to be admired by Conte.
The Italian is also apparently keen to reunite the England international with friend and former Leicester teammate N’golo Kante. The pair were remarkable at the heart of the City midfield just two season’s ago.
Chelsea have so far bid £25m, but the report claims the Foxes value Drinkwater at £40m, the same fee the Blues received for Matic – that’s despite the Englishman being two years younger.
