Chelsea’s 23-goal award winner would thrive on loan at Rangers under Gerrard’s mentorship

The Rangers fans in the Transfer Tavern are patiently waiting for Steven Gerrard to make his first venture into the transfer market as manager of the club.

The resident Gers propping up our bar believe that Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football could come to an end next season now that Gerrard has taken over at the helm, however, they appreciate that they will need to make quality acquisitions in order to bridge the gulf in class. One avenue which Gerrard would be wise to explore in the transfer market is the plethora of talented young players who are searching for first-team opportunities in the Premier League.

The likes of Dominic Solanke and Ben Woodburn have both been linked with moves to Ibrox from Liverpool and understandably so, but one player who has gone under the radar thus far is Chelsea’s Mason Mount. The 19-year-old attacking midfielder spent the last season on loan at Vitesse Arnhem where he scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists from 40 appearances in all-competitions, winning the player of the season award in the process.

Providing a total of 23 goals in one season is an impressive record for almost any player in the game, never mind for one who was playing his first full-season at senior level. Chelsea’s prospect has the unteachable knack of arriving in the box at the right time to get on the end of a cross into the box and, combined with his ability to strike a dead ball from distance, he looks destined to become a key player for the Blues in the years to come.

However, with plenty of competition for places in Chelsea’s first-team squad and Ruben Loftus-Cheek set to return after a season at Crystal Palace, he will undoubtedly struggle for opportunities next season. With that in mind, Gerrard should make an enquiry into his availability this summer in a bid to bring him to Ibrox on a season long-loan deal.

With a mentor of Gerrard’s expertise to work alongside on a daily basis, Mount would be well placed to continue his development and improve various aspects of his game. On paper this looks like a no-brainer for all parties concerned, so Rangers should do everything they can to complete a deal during the summer window.
