No doubt Chelsea are back since the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo as Interim Manager. With 6 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss in his first 8 matches in charge and their Champions League dreams continue as a date with Barcelona in the semi-finals beckons.
But what of there chances of qualifying for next years competition should they fail to win the ultimate prize this season?
Chelsea have 6 games to make up the 5 point deficit from Tottenham and Arsenal in the race to finish fourth.
The fixture congestion continues to pile up as Chelsea travel to Fulham on bank holiday Monday and with Tottenham facing Norwich at home and Arsenal travelling to Molineux the gap could quite easily be back to 4 or 5 points. Fulham have been pretty inconsistent this season and this is a match that could go either way. Fulham Prediction = 1-1
The biggest match in Chelsea’s last 6 fixtures comes in between the 2 matches with Barcelona and is when Chelsea travel to the Emirates to face Arsenal. On the same weekend Tottenham travel to QPR where Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have all lost.
This could well decide Chelsea’s fate, if they were to lose and Spurs were to win the task becomes increasingly difficult. This fixture could depend on whether Chelsea want to take the Champions League fixtures or Champions League qualification more seriously. Arsenal Prediction = 2-1
After the Champions League semi-final Chelsea face 2 home matches against QPR who have been very poor away from home this season and Newcastle who will also be hoping of Champions League qualification. When the pressure is on Chelsea have proved this season that they can perform as well as anyone this is why I see 2 home wins here. Tottenham have what should be a home banker against Blackburn but face a tough away game at Bolton. Arsenal travel to Stoke a match which no team enjoys. QPR Prediction = 3-1 Newcastle Prediction = 2-1
Chelsea then travel to Anfield, a match which used to be a formidable task but this season Liverpool’s home form has been pretty poor with constant draws and disappointing defeats. This one I can see being a draw and with Arsenal playing Norwich, this could be the day they secure CL Qual. Tottenham travel to Villa Park and if Villa’s injury worries have eased this won’t be an easy fixture. Liverpool Prediction = 1-1
All could be up for grabs on the final day, more likely between Spurs, Chelsea and Newcastle. Chelsea have what should be a home banker against Blackburn while Tottenham face Fulham at White Hart Lane. The outsiders Newcastle face Everton at Goodison Park, a place you don’t want to be going needing a win. I see both Chelsea and Spurs winning on this day so the fixtures previous will have to throw up some surprises for Chelsea to finish fourth. Blackburn Prediction = 3-0
All things considered I see Chelsea finishing this season in 5th place. Di Matteo can’t be blamed if this occurs as the damage was caused earlier in the season during the AVB era. If Tottenham or Arsenal drop silly points during their last 7 matches Chelsea might just creep into the CL.
