The last game of Chelsea’s season over the last few years has rarely been particularly important, but this time around, it couldn’t be more so.
The Blues need to beat Newcastle to have any chance of finishing in the top four this season, and so Antonio Conte will have to get his team selection absolutely right.
However, that doesn’t mean that the Italian shouldn’t take a risk or two, as the rewards of such a decision could be huge. Chelsea need a good result, and perhaps – especially given the poor performance on Wednesday evening – they should turn towards a rarely utilised member of the Chelsea squad to make that impact.
Conte’s regular choices clearly aren’t doing the business, and so perhaps young Callum Hudson-Odoi deserves a chance.
Both Willian and Pedro looked poor on Wednesday night, with Chelsea struggling to break down Huddersfield, and so they don’t necessarily deserve to keep their places. Hudson-Odoi, meanwhile, has been nothing short of sensational this season.
He’s been the star of the show in the Chelsea youth system, particularly at the under-18 age group, and it’s clear that he’s ready to take a step up.
The Englishman has had a few cameos this season, but that’s not enough. Realistically, Chelsea are going to need to have a special day to have any chance of finishing in the top four, and the influence of a player like Hudson-Odoi could be the spark they need. Either way, they need a lot of luck – but starting him certainly won’t cost them anything.
If nothing else, a good performance will give him a solid platform from which to build next season.
