Chelsea’s PL ambitions would be destroyed by sale of £54m-rated lynchpin this summer

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern have been disappointed by their club’s tepid defence of their Premier League title this season, but they are confident the current squad of players are capable of turning things around next season.

The grit and determination which characterised Chelsea’s title winning season last time round appears to have eluded the club in recent months. Despite being in the top-four for the majority of the campaign, the Blues have slipped out of the Champions League qualification places and now look destined to play Europa League football next season.

Chelsea’s absence from the elite European competition could have grave consequences on their future ambitions, as naturally the likes of Eden Hazard, Thibaut Courtois and N’Golo Kante will be unhappy with the situation they find themselves in. According to Goal, Kante is a summer transfer target for the recently-crowned Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain.

However, fortunately for the Chelsea supporters, the report also states that Kante is not interested in moving back to France at this stage in his career, despite his club’s shortcomings this season. The French international’s decision to stay at Stamford Bridge will be a determining factor in shaping Chelsea’s ambitions next season, so the fans will certainly be hoping there is truth in recent reports.

Although Kante (valued at £54 million by Transfermarkt) has not been at his outstanding best this season, he has still been a consistent bright-spark in an otherwise sobering campaign for the Blues. There are very few, if any players in world football who are better than Kante in the role he performs, so if he eventually succumbs to the charm of the French capital, Chelsea will be facing a huge battle to return to the top-four next season, never mind a title challenge.

The importance of keeping Kante at Stamford Bridge this summer simply cannot be expressed highly enough – especially given that Hazard’s future remains severely in doubt with Real Madrid rumoured to be lining up a bid for his services. Regardless of who is in charge of Chelsea this summer, there’s no doubt the manager will have a huge task ahead of them in leading Chelsea back into the top-four next season and without Kante that task will be verging on impossible.
