Chelsea’s planned contract talks could lead to their most important agreement in years

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are pretty excited about the talk regarding the future of Thibaut Courtois. Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur revealed last week that the Blues are planning to hold talks with the goalkeeper this month as they look to renew his contract at the club.

His current deal expires in 2019, and so there has been some concern that an agreement may not be reached, but given that talks have apparently been arranged, there appears to be a willingness to do business from both sides. If an agreement is found, our landlord thinks that it could go down as one of Chelsea’s most important in years.

It’s tough to disagree with that sentiment, honestly. Courtois has proven over the last few years just how good he is. Standing at a towering 6ft5, the Belgian is a real sight to behold between the sticks – and when combined with his fantastic agility, the Belgian truly is one of the most naturally talented shot-stoppers in Europe. He’s dominant from set pieces, he’s fantastic when players are running at him, and most important of all, he’s incredibly consistent.

Petr Cech left a huge legacy at Stamford Bridge when he swapped Chelsea for Arsenal. Not only as a player, but also as a personality, Cech was massive. However, Courtois has taken over the mantle and then some. He has become just as influential as Cech both on and off the pitch, and the Belgian deserve so much credit for that.

His contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2019, and so the importance of these talks cannot be understated. Not only would it allow Chelsea to sell him for the massive fee that his quality demands if they were to choose to sell, but more importantly, it would allow the Blues to keep him between the sticks for the next few years if they choose to Рand that would be huge.

Indeed, new signings are one thing, but keeping hold of genuine world class talent is arguably even more important – and Courtois definitely fits under that banner. This is a no-brainer for Chelsea, and it needs to happen sooner, rather than later.
