Christian Eriksen took the world by storm after being named Danish Talent of the Year, Ajax’s Talent of the Year and Dutch Football’s Biggest Talent all in 2011. Since the accolades, he has gone on to help Ajax lift their first league title in seven years as well as retain the trophy a year later. His rising popularity has alerted clubs all around Europe and a move away from Holland looks to be just around the corner.
Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Barcelona have all been heavily linked to the 20-year-old and they all moved one step closer as Eriksen is yet to sign a new contract. With his current deal expiring in 2014, Ajax may have to force themselves to listen to offers or risk losing him for free.
Ajax director Marc Overmars stated: “We would like Christian to sign a new contract with us, but it’s not something he wants.” (Metro) After earning recognition as part of a dangerous attacking force, the attacking midfielder was likened to Michael Laudrup by Ajax legend Johan Cruyff. “The talent is there; now it is up to the player himself. You can compare him with Michael Laudrup. Only time will tell if Eriksen can reach the same level as them.” (UEFA)
As the Danish international contemplates his options, Manchester City were given a first-hand view of Eriksen’s ability as they slumped to a 3-1 defeat in the Champions League against their Dutch opponents. As it stands however, Ajax look to be missing out on the knockout stages of the competition which has prompted Eriksen to a swift move away from the club in January.
Recognition from Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand after Denmark’s 2-1 defeat to England where Eriksen was awarded man of the match began rumours about whether the starlet would make a move to one of the English top-four. “To be quite honest I did not recognize him right before the match, but he is a very good player. He can become a top player,” Lampard said. (Jyllands-Posten)
As a move to a bigger, more competitive league looks very much on the cards, Eriksen will have to ensure he keeps his feet on the ground as he continues to develop. However, with undoubted talent and a humble personality, the young boy from Odense is finally going to make it.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
