As January looms ever closer and the transfer floodgates open again, we explore perhaps one unlikely signing that could be the missing piece in Man City’s jigsaw puzzle.
Rumours were afoot in the summer that Robert Pires was set to join first Aston Villa, as part of Gerard Houiller’s backroom staff and his playing squad, and then Leicester City in a similar role. Those rumours came to nothing but could the Frenchman’s vast creative talents be used elsewhere in the Premiership? For example for Roberto Mancini’s title aspirations could Pires’ leadership, experience and affable nature reassure the City fans that their club is a unified one, capable of winning the league?
More to the point, as Arsene Wenger said when Pires trained at Arsenal recently, he is still in sparkling form, and if he is up for grabs, should City look this gift horse in the mouth? With the plethora of young wingers they have at the club, could the most astute signing of the season be someone who would cost nothing but has been there and got the t shirt?
We may remember that Sol Campbell only came back to Arsenal last year to train for fitness, but ended up in the Champions League, the verge of the England Squad if some reports are to be believed and very nearly helped Wenger’s men mount a sustained title challenge. Could Pires, such a key part of Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’, join up with his friend, compatriot and former teammate Patrick Vieira at Eastlands to rule Premiership midfields again?
