Manchester City are planning to make a move for long-standing United target Simon Kjaer according to the Daily Star. Roberto Mancini is expected to go head-to-head with Sir Alex Ferguson in a battle for the young Dane’s signature.
The 20-year-old defender, who is currently at Palermo, is rumoured to be available for around £11million in the summer but City may look to beat the rush by putting a bid in next month. Such a move is likely to infuriate United who have been tracking Kjaer for months now and see him as a long-term replacement for Nemanja Vidic and future partner for Johnny Evans.
Roberto Mancini sees strengthening his side’s defence as a priority after the concession of soft goals has cost them valuable points in the past. Joleon Lescott is expected to be out for over a month and Nedum Onouha has picked up a calf strain that could rule him out for four weeks. With Kolo Toure set to leave for the African Cup of Nations after the Boxing Day fixture, this leaves Mancini with only Micah Richards and Vincent Kompany as recognised centre-backs and this could accelerate any move for Kjaer.
Kjaer is a Danish international and would prefer a move in the summer as he is settled in Palermo and believes a mid-season move may affect his form and chances of appearing in the World Cup alongside Daniel Agger. The self-confessed Liverpool fan is known to be keen on a move to England though and if an offer was forthcoming he may still be open to it.
