Manchester United midfielder is about to stun everyone by signing a contract with rivals Manchester City. Hargreaves has reportedly been completing a medical with City throughout today.
Hargreaves had been linked with a move to Stoke, QPR but most seriously with a move to West Brom after producing a widely-ridiculed video of himself exercising.
Without doubt Hargreaves is a natural talent and an asset to any team whilst fit, however, the issue is just that – can he stay fit? Is Hargreaves actually capable of performing at the highest level week in week out and maintaining his fitness. So far, you would have to guess that he is not.
Surely Alex Ferguson would not be allow the player to leave otherwise.
From City’s end, the move seems to make sense. The old Newcastle and West Ham conundrum of risking taking a player onto the wage bill who could simply sit on the sidelines and run up medical bills is frankly not a problem. With City’s financial muscle, forking out for Hargreaves possesses no such risk.
And besides, City have ample cover in that role. With Gareth Barry and Yaya Toure performing excellently in that role on Sunday, and with Nigel de Jong, Aleksandar Kolarov and Vincent Company all able to play there, it is not necessarily a position Roberto Mancini needs to worry about.
The potential propaganda however in taking a presumably injured ex-international from Manchester United and allowing him to flourish would be huge in a Premiership year that all ready promises the most evenly contested Manchester derbies in years.Like what the TT have on offer?
