It’s a tough gig being Everton. Despite all the money being thrown about by other clubs you have to look on and think about resolve and all all those other things that you can do for free in football.
Just when no one’s looking you make your way steadily along in the league, staying out of trouble, rolling with the punches. And then, they come. The vultures.
Pienaar’s departure was almost softened by the fact that Phil Neville rebuffed Tottenham’s advances.
But now Leighton Baines has appeared on Manchester City’s radar according to the Daily Express.
This is just 24 hours since David Moyes put the kibosh on the player going to Anfield,
“I can’t see it. It’s not for me that one and I think Liverpool know that as well. Nobody will leave the club unless I give it the go-ahead and that won’t change.”
The mooted deal would be a crafty piece of footwork from Mancini & Co. The plan is to offer cash strapped Everton £20M plus Wayne Bridge.
Subject to a miracle of near Biblical proportions, West Ham look Championship bound so it would be good form to recall the player. Snaring Leighton Baines would only be to City’s advantage, of course.
Will this happen? I’d give it 3/10 for imagination on behalf of the guy that dreamed it up, but it’s patronising towards Everton and Moyes is not a selling manager. He has had his hand forced in the past – and let’s face it Lescott was pants – but this really should not happen.
