Jurgen Klopp is going to have a few tough decisions to make next season with regards to team selection. The arrivals of both Fabinho and Naby Keita have made his midfield far more difficult to predict, and he’s got a few players to pick from for what is likely to be just one remaining midfield slot. You’d expect it to come down to Jordan Henderson and the impressive Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with Fabinho and Naby Keita sat just behind them, but who will Klopp opt for next term?
Both Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Jordan Henderson enjoyed a fine season last term. Often playing together, the pair linked up fantastically, with the Ox offering much of the running, and Henderson offering brilliant passing.
It was the former, though, that stormed ahead of Henderson last season as far as stats are concerned. Granted, Oxlade-Chamberlain played 5 more games than Henderson, but he picked up three times as many goals as the Liverpool captain. Furthermore, he picked up a whopping 7 assists in contrast to Henderson’s 1, and that does tip the scale somewhat. Furthermore, he also has him beat on key passes, of which he has 9 more.
However, Henderson has his leadership credentials on his side. He’s the leader of this team, and it’s tough to see him settling for a role on the bench. Furthermore, he’s also looked really good for England at the World Cup, and so he’s far from down and out.
Indeed, this is very tough for Jurgen Klopp.
This isn’t as cut and dry as it seems.
On paper, the Ox seems to be ahead of Henderson, but stats don’t tell the whole story. The latter is on a good run of form, and his role as this team’s leader cannot be undervalued.
Still, in terms of picking the best team as it looks from the outside, the Ox should be the man given the task to start.
