Selection dilemmas are nothing new when you’re managing a top Premier League team, and next season, Jose Mourinho has a huge one to make in midfield. He’s got an excellent list of name to choose from in the middle of the park, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and now Fred to choose between. You’d expect, given their form, both Pogba and Matic to play – but the same cannot be said for the latter pair. Indeed, it seems likely that only one of the pair will start – but who will get the nod?
Fred is, of course, new to the Premier League, but his form over in Ukraine was impressive to say the least. The pair played the same amount of games, but it was Fred who was on the pitch for more minutes – perhaps indicating that his level of fitness was higher than Man Utd’s Spaniard.
Herrera wasn’t able to bag a single goal last term, which when contrasted with the 3 that Fred scored, is disappointing. He clearly doesn’t have much of an offensive threat.
Likewise, he bagged 3 fewer assists, which echoes that sentiment.
Of course, a move to England is a step up, but on paper, Fred did everything right last term.
It’s hard to imagine Mourinho spending that much money on a player if he wasn’t going to be an upgrade, and the stats certainly seem to indicate that Fred is exactly that.
He looks better than Herrera in every way, and though the Spaniard has been decent at Old Trafford, he wasn’t at his best last term.
This is an easy one for Mourinho, though it will be interesting to see how Herrera reacts if he is indeed playing second-fiddle.
