Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are hoping to keep some of their star players, as they're going to require all the help they can get in order to avoid the dreaded relegation zone.

The Toon Army headed into the transfer window with their Premier League status on the line, knowing that sufficient business would ensure the best possible chance of another season in the top-flight. And, with injury woes spelling for troubling times, potential departures on top of this could make for huge problems in the future of the club. But, according to a report from the Sky Sports Transfer Centre Live blog (10:49), Newcastle United have had no approach or bid from West Ham United for midfielder Jonjo Shelvey.

The 25-year-old has been a key feature in the club's progression over the years, but has failed to replicate the brilliance under Rafa Benitez this season in the 18 appearances played. Although, as one of the main components in what has been an underperforming centre of midfield for the Magpies, they'll be keen to avoid suffering any more setbacks in what's been a fragile area. And, promising news emerged as West Ham's previous links to the former Liverpool man seem to have come to nothing, with the Hammers still yet to make anything of the claims thus far.

Subsequently, their hopes of holding onto the Englishman just received a massive boost, as Newcastle United have insisted that the player is not for sale as they look to head into what is a crucial part of the season without any voids to fill.

Landlord's Verdict:

Jonjo Shelvey was iconic for Newcastle in their promotion to the Premier League last season as the dictator in the midfield, and keeping hold of the 25-year-old will be crucial in their survival hopes come the end of the season. But, for West Ham not to have made a move for the midfielder, it looks as if they're cutting it fine to push a deal through before the close of the window.
