According to the Daily Mail, CSKA Moscow’s Seydou Doumbia is the latest striker to be lined up by Chelsea who are in search of forward reinforcements this summer.
The Ivorian finished the season as the top-scorer in the Russian top flight with 28 goals this season and in all competitions he scored 33 goals in 41 appearances, making him one of the most clinical strikers around Europe.
With CSKA Moscow failing to qualify for next seasons Champions League after a disappointing league campaign, Doumbia has recently stated he would like to progress his career further by joining one of the big clubs in Italy, Spain or England who are qualified to play in the Champions League next term.
When asked if he would be ready for a move to Serie A, he told Corriere dello Sport:
“Yes, more than ready. I’d also be willing to go to Spain or to England, the top leagues. I’d certainly be taking a leap forward in my career.”
Doumbia’s international team mates Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou have already confirmed their intentions to leave Stamford Bridge this summer when their respective contracts expire, leaving Chelsea requiring added firepower to complement the disgruntled Fernando Torres who is likely to be the main man at the Bridge next season.
The 24-year-old is a different type of striker compared to his fellow countryman Drogba. Although he isn’t as commanding in stature, Doumbia has all of the attributes thrive in the Premier League. He possesses explosive pace along with great balance, he also has excellent technical abilities with effortless ball control and immense dribbling abilities with both feet. Most importantly of all, as his goal-scoring record indicates, he is an emphatic finisher.
So could Doumbia excel in the Premier League next term? The striker has consistently proven himself to be adaptable to different circumstances and requirements in other countries which have saw him play in Ivory Coast, Japan, Switzerland and Russia.
This along with his obvious talents and finishing abilities could see him become a valuable acquisition for Chelsea if they decide to pursuit their reported interest.
