With the increasingly frosty relationship between Frank Lampard and Chelsea manager Andre Vilas-Boas it would seem this is to be Frank Lampard’s last season at The Bridge.
With AVB looking to reshape the Chelsea squad this would leave him with the dilemma of finding a replacement for Lampard, who although 33 guarentee’s goals from midfield. With goal scoring midfielders at a premium can Fulham’s Clint Dempsey be the next Frank Lampard and write himself into Chelsea folklore?
Dempsey joined Fulham in January 2007 from New England Revolution for £2 million. His first full season saw him finish the campaign their joint top goal scorer with 7. At the end of the 2008-09 season Dempsey lead the USA to the confederations cup final, underlining his talents on the international stage with three goals in five games.
During the 2009-10 season Dempsey more than played his part in helping Fulham reach the final of the UEFA Europa League. It was his winning goal against Juventus at the Cottage that earned Fulham a 5-4 aggregate victory over the Italian giants. Following his European adventure with Fulham, Dempsey headed to the 2010 World Cup, scoring against England before the USA were eventually knocked out by Ghana.
Dempsey returned to Fulham to lead the line admirably during the 2010-11 season, scoring 13 goals as Fulham finished the season in 8th place. Overall Dempsey has played 170 games scoring 43 goals which equates to a goal every four games. Frank Lampard has played 363 games scoring an impressive 124 goals making a goal ratio of one in every 2.9 matches.
So can this American sensation really replace Frank Lampard at Chelsea? Frank Lampard is well known for his well-timed runs, goal scoring and assists which has made him a true legend of the Barclays Premier League. Clint Dempsey although not so dissimilar is a different type of player, he is what some may call more a number 10 who plays just behind a central striker.
He does possess all the attributes to be a star at a top club in the Premier League, he scores goals from inside and outside the penalty area, possesses an aerial threat but mainly has an uncanny ability to find space between oppositions defence and midfield.
Chelsea could entice Fulham with an offer of between £10-15 million considering the players age and the considerable return this would bring Fulham on the orginal transfer fee.
In terms of replacing Frank Lampard, can any player truly replace such a legend? Probably not, however, Dempsey has all the attributes and track record that could make him a success at Chelsea and with such a low transfer fee in today’s market he would be worth a punt for any club.
