Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are experiencing their best season to date in a league campaign since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Indeed, Jose Mourinho has really got the Red Devils ticking over.
Although United are currently second in the Premier League and into the FA Cup final, the season is a couple of games away from the business end and an important transfer window awaits for both sides of Manchester, so says our barman. Mourinho has surely marked three key areas he needs to improve within his first team, in a hope to bring the Premier League back to Old Trafford next season.
There is a feeling around the bar that Ed Woodward must want to sell before United buy, in a bid to rid the club of some deadwood. While our punters agree and think that the board are looking at trying to balance the books, surely, if they want to close the gap on rivals Man City a big spending summer awaits.
With that being said, our Landlord and barman have taken a look at what one key area could be the turning point in United’s season next year…
OUR VERDICT – Defence
United need a little work at the back, many feel. A new left-back, a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia and a better pool of quality of centre-backs is much sought after and would be the backbone of a great United campaign.
United have a plethora of talent in the final third, and even though their goals conceded is only second to Man City, if they want to win the league – it has to be first. Usually, you’d associate Mourinho-led teams with a much stronger defensive unit than the one they currently have, so there are certainly improvements to be made.
Something that Mourinho prides himself on is his defence and going into his third year he will surely look to sort this out.
