Coach admits that top Liverpool and Chelsea target faces an uncertain future

The Liverpool and Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern both want Virgil van Dijk to come to their club this summer, and it would seem as though a Southampton coach has offered them some reason for optimism…

Speaking to Talk Sport, Southampton coach Eric Black has thrown some fuel on the fire surrounding speculation linking van Dijk with a move away by saying: “It would be wonderful [if van Dijk stayed], and would be a big step forward for Southampton if we could keep him. But he’s one of the best centre-backs in the world, so he may well have options [to move on].

Whilst Black isn’t going as far as to say that he is saying or going, his comments certainly seem to hint that van Dijk could leave the club this summer. Whilst Claude Puel has made an active effort to convince fans that he will be staying, Black is evidently less confident.

Van Dijk has, of course, been linked away in recent months – with both Liverpool and Chelsea touted for a move for the talented defender.

From Liverpool’s perspective, a defensive rebuild is certainly on the cards – with the likes of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren not good enough to compete at the highest level. For Chelsea, the impending departure of John Terry means that the Blues desperately need to find a replacement defender.

For van Dijk’s part, the Dutchman has proven his worth over the last year or so – putting in good performance after good performance – and he will likely have no shortage of suitors this summer.
