I doubt that either of these players will be greatly missed, but the way in which the events unfolded revealed the lack of contact that Capello has had with the England players in that he had not taken the time to talk to either player about their future England ambitions before announcing their inclusion in his squad for the upcoming friendly against Hungary.
Another incident this weekend that exposed the lack of communication between the England manager and his players was Capello’s apparent surprise when he realised that another Manchester United player Michael Carrick was in fact fit to play in the Community Shield.
This coupled with Ashley Cole completely ignoring Capello’s attempt to shake his hand when walking past him in the Royal Box added to an embarrassing day for the England manager.
This is not the first occasion where Capello’s communication has come under question. The England players weren’t told by Capello himself about their inclusion in the World Cup squad who instead chose to let one of his subordinates deliver the news. It is a worrying and continuing theme for the England manager and the developments over the last few days reveal the extent to which he is disconnected and out of the loop with the goings on of his England players.
Questions have been asked as to why the England manager seemed unable to get positive results out of one of the country’s most dedicated players, Wayne Rooney.
Someone ought to teach Capello how to use a phone and quick. He needs to maintain the respect of the players and England fans, but right now he is beginning to look slightly ridiculous and is not inspiring a great deal of confidence in his ability to turn around England’s fortunes after an abysmal World Cup.
