If you look at the wikipedia page for French winger Dimitri Payet, there is a quote from imscouting.com, saying ‘he is quick, and is blessed with terrific technique and dribbling skills.’.
Now that sounds pretty exciting, especially to supporters of Liverpool, who today are being linked to the wide man, this positivity should be tempered by the fact that similar was once said of Mark Gonzalvez….but lets focus on the good!
Payet began his professional career with Nantes whom he joined in 2005, when he was 18, he quickly became a good performer for the clubs reserve side, he also made a handful of appearances for the first team in his first season, but it was the year after, 06-07, when he really started to make a name for himself, making 31 appearances for the first team that season.
When Nantes were relegated at the end of the year, he made a €4million move to St Etienne in order to remain in Ligue 1. The winger is now in his 4th season with the club and he has been a good performer, and has demonstrated that he is perhaps a better player than the level he is currently playing at.
In January of this year, PSG made a move for the player to replace the outgoing Stephane Sessegnon, but St Etienne rejected the move, the player was so unhappy with the decision he went on strike, thus suggesting he definitely wouldn’t be adverse to a move this Summer.
It is our friends at tribal football that today bring us the story about Liverpool showing interest in the wideman. Damien Comolli is aware of the player from his previous work with the club, and he supposedly believes that Payet is the answer to the clubs wing problems. It should be noted that the Anfield side have been linked to 101 different wide men in the past few months, but this one might stand up due to the fact that Comolli has worked with the French international before.
It is reported that there is still some negotiations needed to be done over the price, it is reported that Liverpool are ready to offer £6.5million for the winger, but his club are holding out for a bid closer to the £9million mark.
I really think there could be something behind this, the relationship between player and the Liverpool sporting director would suggest that a deal could be thrashed out. Everyone around Anfield knows how much the club are crying out for a winger, and after a string of real duds, maybe this could be the one?
