Liverpool now under new owners and a new manager, are certainly not short of rumours and stories linking them with pretty much every man under the sun. Charlie Adam seems to be a popular choice going round the rumour mill; however one player that could rival his signature is VFL Wolfsburg midfielder Diego.
The Brazilian is a similar type of player to Adam and plays in the same position. The playmaker has recently commented on the transfer rumours linking him with Liverpool, indicating that he would welcome an approach from Anfield.
“I am honoured that such a club has set their eyes on me,” said the Brazil international.” They are one of the most prestigious teams in the world.” Playing for them would be an honour.”
Diego would not come cheap however given Wolfsburg paid €15.5 million to take him from Juventus after only one season in Turin. Since his return to German football Diego hasn’t been able to find the form that made one of the most potent threats in the league. For instance in his last season at Werder Bremen the play-maker scored 20 goals from midfield. This led to Juventus paying €24.5 million to take him to Italy.
How Liverpool would use the Brazilian in the team is questionable. Diego prefers to play in the hole behind the strikers but with Gerrard, Meireles, and Lucas having key roles to play in the central midfield position Diego would have a fight on his hands to gain a first team place. This would increase given Dalglish’s preference to partner Andy Carroll and Suarez up front in a 4-4-2.
Damien Comolli has been spotted at Wolfsburg matches, and may have been looking at Diego for a comparison to Charlie Adam. Diego is willing to move to England but only in the summer we will find out if Liverpool are serious in their interest for the playmaker.
