Comolli Shows Renewed Interest In International Dutch Diamond

What links the following players: Ibrahima Bakayoko, Lionel Messi, Tonton Zola Moukoko, Cherno Samba and Lebohang Mokoena?

If you know the asnwer to that, hang your head in shame, because you, much like me have spent far too long getting furious with your PC over another inexplicable defeat on Football/Championhip Manager.

If you didn’t get that, allow me to explain, all of the above were ‘wonderkids’ on the populer football management franchise, sometimes the game makers did actually manage to pick out real talents, and sometimes they made random players really good in the game.  In extreme cases Premiership clubs have been known to sign said players, i’m thinking of Bakayoko and Everton, what a mess that was!

Well sometimes players that were great on the game, prove to be great in real life and it seems that Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish thinks that will be the case with Dutch youngster Georginio Wijnaldum.  Away from the virtual footalling world, what do we actually know about him?

The winger started life with Sparta Rotterdam, a club he joined when he was just 6 years old.  He stayed there for 7 years and after being courted by bigger clubs at numerous points he finally moved to Feyenoord at the age of 13.  He made his debut for the club in April 2007 at just 16 and 148 days, becoming the youngest ever player to appear for the Feyenoord first team.  In 2009 he was a key member of the squad and signed a contract to run until 2012.  He has made 85 appearences for the club in 4 seasons scoring 9 goals.

Wijnaldum is best played on the wing, or maybe behind a striker. He is known for being pacey, with good passing ability and possesing excellent dribbling skills.  Definitely an exciting player to watch he would certainly entertain wherever he ends up playing, there could however be questions about whether he is strong enough to survive in a more physical league.

The players future has always been of much debate, and in the past he has been linked to a host of clubs including Real Madrid, Chelsea and AC Milan, it is thought however that his ‘dream move’ would be to Liverpool.

There were strong rumours last Summer stating that the Merseyside team had made an official approach for the player but these reports didn’t come to anything.  Well now Italian site TuttoMercatoWeb are reporting that the Anfield outfit will return for the player this Summer and attempt to secure his services for the coming season.

Liverpool may not have had 100% success with Dutch players recently, where Kuyt has succeeded, Ryan Babel flattered to deceive.  I however believe WIjnaldum is a decent player, he is skillfull enough to cause problems to Premiership fullbacks and unlike Babel his game does not entirely revolve around pace.

Whether he turns out to be the next Lionel Messi or the next Anthony Vanden Borre (both FM legends!), only time will tell, but either way there is a good story in there somewhere!
