As Liverpool limped out of continental competition it became increasingly apparent that the rebuilding job that Kenny Dalglish has began is certainly not over yet. He has done a good job thus far bringing in some fine attacking players and generally his defense looks tighter, the only area of the back line that still needs work is the left side.
In recent weeks they have been linked with Jose Enrique of Newcastle as well as Celtic defender Emilio Izaguirre, well according to reports in recent days there is now another man in the frame with Damien Comolli showing interest in Spanish defender Nacho Monreal.
Monreal came through the academy of Spanish side Osasuna and began appearing for the clubs reserve side in 2004, after 2 years he was promoted to the first team and made his full debut for the club at the beginning of the 06-07 season, he became the first choice left back the following year and has gone on to become a top performer for the club. International caps have followed and he has played numerous times for his country.
Monreal recently signed a new contract that will run until 2014 therefore the player would not come particularly cheap, it is thought that Osasuna would not accept any offers below £9million, this however has not put off the Liverpool staff. Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli watched the player last week and it is thought that he was extremely impressed with his talents and this may have pushed him up the clubs wishlist ahead of Enrique, Izaguirre and Maynor Figueroa.
Interest in the player may be high, he has attracted the attention of Arsene Wenger and Arsenal recently and if their negotiations with contract rebel Gael Clichy are not solved soon, they may look to renew their interest in the Spanish fullback. Liverpool really could do with a left back, that is stating the obvious, they have used Glen Johnson there recently and he has done OK, but it is still still just a makeshift solution. Young Danny Wilson played there for them in the Europa League last night, but at 19 he isn’t a viable option for a run in the Premier League so it is clearly something that the Liverpool hierarchy need to address this Summer.
A good player with experience in a top league, I am sure that Monreal would make a good defender for Liverpool, they have been linked with so many fullbacks in recent weeks though, who knows if this is the one that they will actually move for.
