It appears that Damien Comolli has been making himself a busy man at Anfield since his arrival, Liverpool have been linked with a string of players as Kenny Dalglish looks to reshape his side so they can be challenging higher up the table next season.
After bringing in a couple of new strikers and selling one, it is the attacking midfield position that appears to be the focus of the Liverpool hierarchy now. The man they are looking at is nomadic Brazilian Diego who seems to find it extremely difficult to hold onto a club.
The party loving South American began his career with giants Santos and came through their youth setup with fellow Brazilian internationals Elano, Robinho and Alex.
He made his debut for the club in 2002 at 16 years of age and he stayed with the club for 2 seasons before moving to Europe where he signed for Porto where he has signed to be the replacement for the departing Deco.
He only remained there a couple of seasons after failing to hold down a regular first team place and so he was on the move again, this time to Germany for his first spell in the Bundesliga. He cost Werder Bremen £5million and went on to be a great player for the club, the prolific midfielder in his final season managed to score an impressive 22 goals in 39 games.
Things went slightly downhill for the player from there, he moved to Italian giants Juventus for £20million, but after only one season he moved back to Germany signing for Wolfsburg for a fee of £13million.
He has struggled so far this season, as has the team generally and controversy is never far away from the tricky player. He was recently fined heavily for ignoring player instructions and taking a penalty instead of the designated taker only to miss it.
He is known for his great ability to set up plays and pull strings for sides, he is a tremendous passer and extremely skilled with the ball at his feet, his shooting is also impressive and he has a very good scoring record for a midfielder. Unfortunately like many Brazilian footballers his off the field antics have always been a bit of an issue and his reputation has been slightly tarnished on a few occasions.
It is thought that Liverpool are preparing a bid of around £15million for the player who would be a fantastic addition to their side should he be able to show his form of previous years. Wolfsburg are struggling in the Bundesliga and recently sacked their coach Steve McClaren, however the player has reiterated his desire to stay at the club by saying:
“I’m very happy at Wolfsburg and I’m pleased to play for this club…..I knew that the club were working on a long-term project when I signed for Wolfsburg and I was aware of the risks of being part of such a project…..I’m here to help the club and I won’t walk away if things are not going as planned. It doesn’t really matter though as I’m confident that we won’t be relegated.”
The players passion for his club is admirable, however should a bid be accepted by his club from Liverpool it would represent a really good option for the player. It would allow him to play on a bigger stage and for one of the biggest clubs in world football, he would probably be offered a pay rise too. Whether the management team could keep him on the straight and narrow is also worthy of questioning, but in terms of footballing ability I think he would be a great asset to the club.
Diego lining up behind Suarez and Carroll could be an extremely attractive proposition for the Anfield faithful and I can see it being a transfer worth pursuing for Comolli and Dalglish at Liverpool, whether than can get it through however should Wolfsburg survive relegation remains to be seen.
