Under the influence of the new Director of Football Strategy, Liverpool are set to revolutionise their transfer policy. With a French twist.
Starting in January and then continuing over the summer transfer window, new owners NESV are set to dip into their deep pockets and show their financial resolve.
Targets Loic Remy, Adil Rame, Dimitri Payet and Yann M’Vila, who have all been identified by Comolli as the new generation of French talent and who all played in the French annihilation of England last month, are on the list. Whether or not Marseille, Lille, St Etienne and Rennes will release the hot prospects is another matter though. Apart from the fact that all players are under 25 and arguably the most talented players in Europe, they can play anywhere in midfield or up front – except Rami who is a centre back of considerable class – which means that Chelsea, Man City and even La Liga big boys Real and Barca should be interested too.
Is Damien Comolli right to invest so much in untested youngsters? Is this the ex-Spurs man flexing his muscle and overpowering Roy Hodgson in the first example of a power struggle? Is this the start of a new era at Anfield? Or is this one last throw of the dice for Liverpool?
