Concern for Klopp as Liverpool suffer blow ahead of Merseyside derby clash against Everton

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to their side’s clash with Everton on Friday. Amidst the prospect of a debut for Virgil van Dijk, the Reds are feeling rather confident given their side’s current run of form. They’re really impressing under Jurgen Klopp, and they’re expecting to progress in the FA Cup this week.

However, ahead of the game, they have been hit with a rather significant blow. Klopp has revealed, via the official Liverpool website, that the duo of Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho are both doubts ahead of the game.

He said: “Phil [Coutinho] are Mo [Salah] are injured, not massively but enough for today [to be] no chance. And [they are] a doubt, at least a doubt, for Everton”.

Klopp’s quotes can be interpreted a few ways, but whichever way you spin it, this is bad news for Liverpool. Salah and Coutinho have emerged as the two most important members of the Liverpool first team this term, with the former impressing in his first season back in the Premier League.

Klopp’s suggestion that they are ‘not massively’ injured is positive, but his later sentiment – that the duo are ‘at least’ a doubt – does suggest that the problem could be quite significant. That suggests that, as the game edges closer, that ‘doubt’ could well transition into unavailability.

Either way, a long-term layoff looks unlikely, but the Reds in the Transfer Tavern are preparing for a week or two without their star duo.

Landlord’s Verdict

Much has been made of Salah’s start to the season, whilst Philippe Coutinho has also impressed.

Liverpool, you would think, would struggle without either player, but the prospect of losing both of them is a real worry.

Given the significance of the fixture – it doesn’t get bigger than the Merseyside derby – this is a real blow for the Reds.
