Manchester City’s transfer window was a quiet one with Riyad Mahrez being the only first-team arrival at the Etihad this summer.
And while Mahrez is obviously a brilliant signing for the Premier League champions, it was well-documented how badly manager Pep Guardiola wanted to bring in a defensive midfielder alongside the Algerian.
That, however, did not happen after Guardiola’s No.1 target for the position Jorginho opted to join Maurizio Sarri and Chelsea instead.
With such a key position not strengthened, on top of Kevin De Bruyne’s injury, the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United may feel their Premier League title hopes have been boosted.
The Etihad faithful, though, are still confident that their club can go all the way again this season despite the above.
When asked by Transfer Tavern would Guardiola rue the decision to not bring in a new defensive midfielder this summer, 67% of Manchester City supporters voted no, while only 33% believed there could be consequences.
A player like Jorginho would have definitely improved Manchester City but, assessing Guardiola’s squad thoroughly, there are individuals who can fill in for the team’s current first-choice defensive midfielder Fernandinho when necessary.
Ilkay Gundogan is just one example, and the base of the Citizens’ midfield is a position the German has played in before.
As for the other areas of Manchester City’s squad, there is enough depth for the club to easily retain their Premier League crown and go further in the Champions League.
