The Daily Mail has reported that Alan Pardew, the Newcastle United manager, has personally gone to Holland to look at one of their key targets for the summer transfer window.
Jan Vertonghen is the Ajax captain and is claimed as their star defender starting every single Eredivisie league game this season when he was fit.
Yet why would Vertonghen go to Newcastle when he has openly admitted he would prefer to go to Arsenal? Also if Newcastle do not get Champions League football would he accept the transfer move?
“I have instructed my agent carefully. He knows which clubs I want to join, and Arsenal are one of them.” He said that he would prefer the move to North London because,“Arsenal are a magnificent club”.
Despite the attraction Vertonghen has towards Arsenal, he may struggle to achieve first team football at the club due to their preferred centre-backs Thomas Vermaelen and Per Mertesacker creating a great relationship at the back.
Whilst at Newcastle, Vertonghen would be much more likely to play first team football. Although, he may not be able to receive the Champions League football he would be able to get if he remains with Ajax or move to Arsenal.
However, with a string of clubs such as Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur also looking to move the defender to their club in the summer, it appears that Jan Vertonghen will have a whole host of decisions to make.
