Contact being made: Southampton eyeing £22.5m-rated 25-year-old as shock transfer solution

The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for their side to bring in at least one more new face today. It has been a very disappointing season so far for the Saints, and with the threat of relegation still a very real concern, it’s clear that more genuine quality is needed at St Mary’s.

A recent report from the Independent, then, has certainly peaked the interest of our resident Saints. The Independent is reporting that Southampton are keen on a move for Tottenham attacker Erik Lamela, and they are said to be making contact in an effort to assess his availability.

Significantly, Tottenham would likely be unwilling to sanction a permanent deal, but a loan deal could be something that they are potentially interested in – making this an exciting proposition for Southampton.

Lamela has, of course, only just returned from a long-term injury, and his game time at Spurs has been limited since coming back. A spell at St Mary’s, then, would allow him to regain his fitness and form – making it a move that makes sense for all parties.

Rated at £22.5 million by Transfer Markt, the Argentine is incredible potent going forward – impressing with his fantastic technique and dribbling when given a chance by Mauricio Pochettino. That would be important for Southampton, as they desperately need a solution to their attacking woes.

That being said, Southampton’s interest at present is just that – and an imminent move is not something the Independent seem to suggest is likely. It’s looking to be an interesting few hours for the club, though.

Landlord’s Verdict

A move for Lamela makes sense. He has looked good when he has played at Spurs this season, but competition for places is simply too good at Wembley at the moment.

Southampton, meanwhile, desperately need some creativity in the midfield and the attack, and Lamela would certainly provide that.

It’s no surprise that Spurs don’t want to sell him, but he could certainly do a job short-term if Southampton are able to secure a deal in that capacity.
