Contact Made And £80m …Yes, £80m Bid Anticipated…

We all remember the uproar from United fans when one time fan favourite Cristiano Ronaldo swapped Manchester for what he claimed to be a ‘bigger club’ Real Madrid.

Well if reports in the Daily Mirror and other internet hype is to be believed then United fans will once again be fuming this summer – and it certainly won’t be because of the good old English weather – but more to do with the fact Manchester rivals City are preparing to swoop for Portuguese poster boy Ronaldo and are willing to offer Madrid the original £80m they paid for him and offer Ronaldo between £400-500,000 a week!

Now similar claims were made last summer when it was reported City had sent Ronaldo a picture of a Bentley full of money in order to entice the world’s 2nd best player to Eastlands (because he can’t afford a Bentley).

The Mirror report comments made by a “close source” to Ronaldo on goal.com have added fuel to the fire. They report this “source” has said:

“The signs now from the Ronaldo camp are surprisingly more positive.

“The contact has taken place in the last few weeks and there is serious chatter in the corridors at the Etihad, akin to when City tried to sign Kaka from AC Milan a few years back.

“City want a marquee signing this summer to confirm their emergence as serious players among football’s elite.

“Ideally, they would do so from a position of strength as Premier League champions but whatever happens in the title race they want to send out a statement of intent.

“Ronaldo is the one they have wanted for a long time. They know they will not get Lionel Messi.”

Now I’d never say any deal DEFINATELY won’t happen, but really? really? are City fans going to believe this over-hyped media spin?

Ronaldo has been nothing short of sensational since moving to Madrid so surely his stock has gone up? City are preparing to offer Madrid £80m which gives them no return on their investment (not exactly something you’d hear on Dragon’s Den).

Ronaldo left United because he had achieved everything he could with them and in England so why would he return to a country where there is no challenge for him?

The only thing that may entice Ronaldo, provided Madrid accept £80m, would be the ridiculous wages City are prepared to pay. There is no player in the world, including Messi who are worth £400,000+ a week, people keep saying money in football is ridiculous well surely the FA should step in and say no to this deal.

If Ronaldo joins City this summer then everyone will know the only reason is financial gain. Ronaldo seems obsessed with beating Messi to the crown of world’s best footballer, but one thing Messi has always held over Ronaldo has been his attitude and personality, does Ronaldo think becoming a mercenary will aid his quest?

Err…No Ronaldo, it won’t!
