Contact made: Chelsea reportedly looking to fix problem area for Conte in January

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for Roman Abramovich to back Antonio Conte with a few new faces at Stamford Bridge this month. Ross Barkley has already moved to Stamford Bridge, but with the Blues lacking depth in a number of key areas, it’s clear that more investment is needed.

Perhaps the most significant problem for Chelsea, with regards to their personnel, comes at left-back. Marcos Alonso has been sensational this season, but Conte is without an experienced alternative to the Spaniard – meaning that he has been forced to feature in nearly every game for the Blues.

Fortunately for Conte, it appears as though the Blues are keen to resolve this problem sooner, rather than later.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea have made an inquiry regarding the availability of Roma defender Emerson Palmieri. Reportedly left frustrated in their pursuit of Alex Sandro, the Blues are said to be hopeful of securing a £20 million move for Palmieri as they look to provide Conte with more options.

Palmieri is a bit-part figure at Roma at present, having made just one start all season, whilst his only involvement in Serie A has been a single appearance from the bench.

That being said, he remains a very solid player, and at just 23-years-old, there is certainly a lot of scope for development. Efficient going forward and defensively, Palmieri’s main qualities come when the ball is at his feet, with a fantastic range of passing and crossing making him a real threat down the left-hand side.

Whether Chelsea secure a deal remains to be seen, but the Blues are clearly keen to upgrade in this role.

Landlord’s Verdict

Don’t be fooled by his lack of game time – Palmieri is a top young talent.

Significantly, given that the Blues are said to be hopeful of a £20 million deal, he would represent far greater value than Alex Sandro – with the Italian likely to be, at the start at least, a rotational option at Stamford Bridge if he were to move.

He’s clearly still lacking experience and he needs to continue to develop, but he has bags of raw talent, and he could be a great fit as a result.
