Contact made: Liverpool begin discussions regarding move for highly-rated international

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are fearing the worst at the moment. Though the month of January started off well, with the capture of Virgil van Dijk, there is a real sense of anxiety regarding the future of Philippe Coutinho. The Brazilian’s future is far from certain, leaving our resident Reds feeling rather nervous.

Fortunately, though, it appears as though the Liverpool brass is making contingency plans. According to the Mirror, whilst Coutinho could leave Anfield this month, the Reds are making moves to soften the potential blow. The club are said to have made contact with Monaco regarding a move for Thomas Lemar, with the club seemingly viewing him as the perfect replacement for Coutinho.

It’s certainly a move that would improve the mood of Liverpool fans, with Lemar undoubtedly one of Europe’s best attackers. He’s been a star for Monaco over the last 18 months, providing a consistent threat down the flanks and through the middle. He was, of course, in the team that won Ligue 1 last season, and he stood out amongst players like Kylian Mbappe and Tiemoue Bakayoko – who have since moved on.

The parallels between him and Coutinho are evident, too. Both are attacking, quick and creative players – with both Monaco and Liverpool respectively relying on their talents going forward.

He’d be an expensive option, but Coutinho’s sale would likely earn the Reds big money, and reinvesting that money in a player of Lemar’s quality would be a wise decision.

Landlord’s Verdict

Lemar’s a top talent. We don’t know how he would adapt to the Premier League, but he’s doing everything right in France at present.

It’s going to take a great player to step into Coutinho’s shoes if he does leave, and Lemar clearly has the quality.

It’s going to be an interesting few weeks for Liverpool.
