Sorry Toon fans, not sure you are going to like this rumour. It appears there is a new name in the frame to replace Andy Carroll and it is a striker currently playing with the Geordie giant at Anfield.
No it isn’t Dirk Kuyt, it’s David N’Gog, not very inspiring is it. Our friends at InsideFutbol reckon that he is one of the two strikers that Alan Pardew is looking to recruit this Summer.
N’Gog signed for Liverpool in 2008 from PSG, and he was lauded as a top young talent. He has been given ample opportunities in his three seasons at the club, although he has not managed to really grasp these chances. He has probably played far more than would have been expected, mostly due to long term niggling injuries suffered by former Liverpool forward Fernando Torres.
The French striker has managed 9 goals in 60 Premier League appearances, it should be noted however that many of those appearances were off the bench. Lately however opportunities have become a lot more limited, the arrival of Luis Suarez and Carroll have pushed him out of the first team picture, meaning he may have to move on for more regular football.
Whether he is the man to answer Newcastle’s goal scoring problems, I am unsure. Whilst he is only 22, so its not fair to write him off entirely, I just don’t see him as a major goal threat in the Premier League. InsideFutbol reckon that Newcastle are looking to recruit 2 new strikers, and that N’Gog is just one of them. If the second is someone more proven then I suppose it may not be a bad piece of business, but if they are expecting N’Gog to spear head their attack and carry their goal threat then I am not sure how successful it will be.
One thing is for sure and that is how much they need to improve their firepower. Currently on their books they have Peter Lovenkrands, Shola Ameobi and Nile Ranger. Lovenkrands might not even be around next season, and whilst Ameobi is a worker, he isn’t a prolific goalscorer. Ranger clearly has a lot of potential, but he’s not quite ready yet, so clearly they need a new striker, I am just not overly convinced that David N’Gog is the right man.
Considering they have £35million to spend I would expect to see someone a bit more inspiring…..
