The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern were very sad when Nemanja Matic was sold to Man Utd…
Though a departure was expected, given that Matic wasn’t involved in Chelsea’s pre-season preparations, the Serbian’s departure was still viewed as disappointing – especially given the lack of midfield cover currently within the ranks at Stamford Bridge.
Despite being the manager, Antonio Conte viewed the sale as disappointing too, it seems, with the Italian offering an insight into his reaction to the transfer for Sky Sports.
As per Sky Sports, Conte said: “The importance for me about this player, who is a really good player, a top player, very important for our team, but sometimes you must accept this crazy transfer market”.
He added: “And sometimes you must accept different decisions. But he is a great loss for us”.
It’s a strange situation, that a manager rates and seemingly wants to keep a player that has been sold, but that is so often the way in modern football. At Chelsea, in particular, managers appear to have very little control – and that seems to be the case here.
All the while, Conte seems to recognise that the money offered made the deal worth it, but that doesn’t take away from his clear disappointment. The Italian, undoubtedly, wanted Matic to remain at the club – but he had little choice.
Chelsea’s decision to sell Matic was a strange one, especially considering the fact that the Blues are really struggling for depth in midfield at present. He’s been so solid for the club since he joined, and now they are left with just Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante as their only two fit midfielders.
More signings are likely to come, but given that Chelsea have left it late, they can expect inflated prices – which could end up mitigating the profit made from the sale of the Serbian.
As Conte says, though, Chelsea clearly couldn’t turn the offer down, and so it’s up to them to fix the situation.
