Conte could launch £50m+ move for defensive stalwart, Chelsea are leading the race

The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to see a few players come to Stamford Bridge this summer…

The Blues are performing well in the Premier League at present, with a title likely to be forthcoming at the end of the current campaign, with 10 points between Chelsea and Tottenham.

The real challenge for manager Antonio Conte, though, will be retaining the title next season – with the Blues likely to need a few major arrivals in order to achieve that aim.

It would appear as though they are closing in on their first major arrival, with the Telegraph reporting that Chelsea are leading the race for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk – with the Saints reportedly expecting bids of over £50 million.

This report has delighted the Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern, with van Dijk one of the Premier League’s best defenders at present. Prior to an injury, the Dutchman was a real stalwart in the heart of the Southampton defence – and quickly became captain under Claude Puel.

What exactly would van Dijk bring to this team? Undoubtedly, van Dijk is a real force in the air, offering a major presence both defensively and offensively. He is also comfortable with the ball at his feet – much like John Terry.
