The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to bring in a few new players in January. The Blues have enjoyed a solid start to the season under Antonio Conte, and they are hot on the tail of Jose Mourinho’s Man Utd. However, they remain some distance away from Man City, and they clearly need to sign some more quality if they are to catch Pep Guardiola’s men in top spot.
It’s no real surprise, then, that Antonio Conte is said to be ‘determined’ to be busy in January, at least according to the Mirror. Significantly, the Mirror notes that Brazilian defender Alex Sandro is a key target for Chelsea – with a £50 million move reportedly set to be attempted to be pushed through this month.
Sandro is one of the best defenders currently playing in Europe, and over the last few years, whilst he has been at Juventus, he has proven his quality. A left-back by trade, the Brazilian is an offensive player – providing fantastic pace, dribbling and crossing – whilst he is also solid defensively.
Given Chelsea’s 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 formation, an offensive wing-back is needed, and so Sandro would, in that sense, be a perfect fit.
He’d have to compete with Marcos Alonso, of course, and that will be no easy feat should he join. The Spaniard has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent players this season, but Antonio Conte clearly recognises the lack of depth at left-back as a significant problem.
Whether a move happens remains to be seen, but Chelsea’s interest appears concrete.
Though Marcos Alonso has been in fine form this season, Sandro is undoubtedly one of the world’s best in his position.
If he were to join, Chelsea’s left-back spot would become one of the most talented in Europe, with both players arguably good enough to feature for most of Europe’s best teams.
Conte and Sandro know each other from their time together at Juventus, and so Conte is clearly a big fan, and Sandro could be enticed by the prospect of linking up with his old boss. Given that, a move certainly would make sense.
