The Chelsea fans in the Transfer Tavern are a bit perplexed by the rumours surrounding the club at the moment. Antonio Conte is desperate to bring a new striker to Chelsea and has been linked with a swoop for West Ham’s Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch of Stoke City, Islam Slimani of Leicester City and Burnley forward Ashley Barnes.
It is clear that Conte wants a target man. He wants a big centre-forward to bring on to replace Alvaro Morata or accompany him late in the games. Indeed, he does not seem to believe that Michy Batshuayi is up to scratch as a backup striker, much to the frustration of our Blues in the bar.
But Conte is mistaken if he wants to only go for a target man. He needs a better all round goal scorer. This is something that Jamie Vardy could offer Chelsea.
The England international is a busy striker who presses the defence, doesn’t stop running and causes all kinds of problems with his pace and direct approach. On top of this, he knows where the net is, having proved that for the Foxes over the years.
Many questioned if the former Fleetwood Town striker was a one season wonder after his amazing year in front of goal during Leicester City’s title-winning campaign. But this season, Vardy is silencing his doubters and he already has ten goals in the Premier League in 23 games.
With Morata struggling for form in front of goal, Vardy could even become Chelsea’s first choice striker until the former Real Madrid and Juventus hit man rediscovers his goalscoring touch. Rated at just £16.2m on Transfermarkt, Vardy certainly seems a more sensible option than any of their other reported targets.
