Antonio Conte’s name was sung around the Transfer Tavern yesterday when it was finally announced he’d be coming into Stamford Bridge this summer but it’s clear the Italian faces problems at his new side.
The Guardian state Conte faces a stern test to keep star-striker Diego Costa at Stamford Bridge, as the Spaniard is intent to return to his home nation- with former employers Atletico Madrid leading the hunt.
Costa is the leading forward at Chelsea and with Loic Remy, Radamel Falcao and Alexandre Pato likely to leave this summer, an exit for Costa too would leave the Blues needing a wealth of additions in attack- and their lack of Champions League football will make it difficult to attract top targets.
There’s plenty of options on the table for Costa, with his agent reportedly offering his services to Paris Saint-Germain, whilst there’s also interest from China. However, Costa’s preference is to return to La Liga, where he was a star with Atletico as they won the title in 2014.
Whether Costa stays put or not, it’s clear Conte needs to improve the forward line and a number of top targets have been touted by the press. Whether Chelsea can attract such players though is another matter entirely.
